While virtual business cards are becoming a viable alternative to paper cards, there is still a huge demand for traditional business cards.
Can advertising your job availability on YouTube work?

Pretty funny? Pretty smart? Pretty effective? Based on the results Alec Brownstein received, I’d say all of the above.

Nowadays, using social media to find and reach out for new job opportunities is nothing new, although the methods for doing so are still being and will continue to be perfected … and opportunities for creativity will always be present.

Take for example, the case of Alec Brownstein, senior copywriter at creative advertising shop Young & Rubicam (Y&R) New York. Last summer, Alec was just another tired, 28-year-old copywriter at a large international ad agency who wanted nothing more than to work at “a really creative shop for really creative [creative directors].”

In his search for a career move, he noticed that the creative directors he “Googled” frequently had no sponsored links attached to their names; and when he thought about the fact that he himself “Googles” himself quite frequently, the proverbial lightbulb went off.

“Everybody Googles themselves,” Brownstein explained. “Even if they don’t admit it. I wanted to invade that secret, egotistical moment when [the creative directors I admired] were most vulnerable.”

He then picked 5 of his targeted creative directors – those he admired the most – and bought Google ads for their names.

The ads ran something like this:

“Hey, [creative director's name]: Goooogling [sic] yourself is a lot of fun. Hiring me is fun, too” with a link to Brownstein’s website, alecbrownstein.com.

The end result … 4 of the 5 called HIM. Two job offers: Scott Virtrone and Ian Reichenthal of Y&R New York. At the end of that year he bagan working for Y&R. Total cost = $6. Not bad.

The five (5) most recent and various blog postings that caught my fancy for one reason or another on my Friday blog posting day..

The following are – for one reason or another – usually because they play into social media and one’s individual online branding – are the 5 most recent blog postings that struck me ….

Facebook and the Grand Privacy Experiment: What stood out to me …… “I believe the most interesting thing about these Facebook disputes is the need for a reexamination of what a “privacy right” is, and what right advertisers or others have to exploit information known about individuals.”

13 Truths About Social Media Measurement: What stood out to me …. “You probably need to spend three times as much time and effort evaluating and acting on your data than you do collecting and formatting it. Why? Because the analysis is what yields direction, plans, action steps, you name it.”

Why are public relations professionals handling social media?: What stood out to me ….”Business development by a lawyer or a law firm, done via the Internet, is all about relationships.” …. “You wouldn’t send a PR person to network on your behalf at a cocktail party filled with clients, prospective clients, and association leaders.”

Are You Missing Next Big Boom in Accounting Careers?: What stood out to me …. “The prospects for a 25-year-old who knows IFRS with experience at a global firm,” Walker says, “will be incredible.”

Top 10 Most Creative People in Business: What stood out to me …. re: “Lady Gaga” “Gaga has done something unprecedented, melding her inspirations with au courant dance pop and Web savvy to build a business empire notable for both the speed of its creation and the diversity of its platforms.”

The US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics is giving the thumbs up on “Public Relation Specialists“, which they partly define as including “[t]he recent emergence of social media in the public relations is expected to increase job growth as well. Many public relations firms are expanding their use of these tools, and specialists with skills in them will be needed.”

In the Department’s Occupational Outlook Handbook’s ’10-year-out-report’, they project that the 275,200 jobs held in this category in 2008 will increase to 341,300, a 24 percent increase. Not bad.

Median annual wages for salaried public relations specialists were $51,280 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $38,400 and $71,670; the lowest 10 percent earned less than $30,140, and the top 10 percent earned more than $97,910. Median annual wages in the industries employing the largest numbers of public relations specialists in May 2008 were:

Aaron Bradley over at Suite101.com provides a nice list of traits found in successful in-house search-engine-optimization professionals.

He rightfully points out that it the overall combination of these qualities that determines whether the candidate is right for the position and vice versa:

Independent Learner

Attention to Detail

Creative and Critical Thinker

Team Player

Analytical Mind

Suitable Education and Experience

The most interesting statement he makes – to me at least – is on that last quality listed, “Suitable Education and Experience”:

For better or worse, there is very little in the way of SEO educational programs out there (with the exception of various levels of paid search certification), so it is unlikely that any potential candidate is going to wow you with their schooling. Some types of educational background are obviously applicable – internet (or general) marketing, computer science and web design, to name a few.

I have found, personally, that the combination of Independent Learner and Critical Thinker are often the best indicators of a successful SEO maven. Because this industry is still growing, new technology is constantly expanding, awareness is needed of new social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook … there is a real need to stay abreast of all these AND to see how they fit within the company’s branding and other marketing and technical structures properly.

The extra-step needed there, however, is how can the company adapt and adopt those same advancements within their respective industry.

USAToday.com ran an article today talking about software-as-a-service, or SaaS, as well as “cloud computing“. The articles talks about the new efficiency and potential to create new business models revolving around the ability to leverage online software to both start and run a successful business.

No longer is a business, no matter its size, restricted to just using “boxed-software”, with all its attendant needs for manual updates, technical skills needed to troubleshoot it, etc. This ability to access valuable software-as-a-service online can create both cost and productivity effectiveness immediately.

But my favorite quote from the article … indicating potential job growth in this sector … is:

Growth in spending on cloud services by U.S. companies with 100 or fewer employees is projected to grow from $2.4 billion this year to $4.1 billion in 2013, according to research firm IDC. But that could turn out to be conservative if awareness spreads. “We’re at an acceleration point,” says Benioff. “We’re seeing real innovation and real growth, and it’s all coming from cloud computing.”
